Holiday Safety
Cheerful holidays mean staying safe by making smart choices with electrical decorations and products.
Light Up Safely
- Use lights that are properly rated for indoor or outdoor use.
- Follow package instructions and never exceed wattage limits.
- Replace damaged cords, plugs, or ornaments.
- To avoid a fire hazard, don’t plug too many lights or decorations into one outlet.
- Use Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) for outdoor connections.
- Choose lights with a recognized Canadian approval mark.
Electrical Product Safety
- Buy electrical products only from trusted retailers.
- Watch for typos in the product information, as they may signal counterfeit items.
- Check for a Canadian certification mark from an accredited agency on the label or in the description. This ensures product is tested to applicable standards.
- If a product lacks certification or seems unsafe, don’t use it. Return it and report it to the Electrical Safety Authority.
Extension Cords and Plugs
- Avoid overloading extension cords or circuits, as too many decorations can overheat and cause fires. Frequent blown fuses or tripped circuits are warning signs.
- Never remove the third prong (the grounding pin) as it prevents electric shock.
- Use Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) for outdoor connections.
- Don’t run cords under carpets, through windows/doors, or where furniture can damage them.
- Keep connections off the ground and away from puddles, driveways, and walkways.
Installing Decorations
- Follow manufacturer instructions; connect no more than three light strings together.
- Keep bulbs away from cords, wires, cloth, paper, or other flammable materials.
- Use proper clips to hang decorations and lights. Avoid staples or nails that can damage cords.
- Check for overhead power lines before using ladders or decorating outdoor trees. Stay at least 3 metres away.
- Remove decorations after the holidays, as they're not meant for year-round use.
General Safety Tips
- Turn off holiday lights and decorations when you leave the house or go to bed.
- Don't let children put electrical decorations or cords in their mouths.
- Keep an eye on pets that may chew or damage electrical cords.
