Continuing Education Program

Current Status

The Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery of Ontario advised ESA that the regulatory change to introduce a Continuing Education requirement for Master Electricians will not be taking place until further notice.

Continuing Education for Licence Holders

To enhance public electrical safety, the Ontario Auditor General, in her Report dated December 2020, recommended that the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) work together with the Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery (MPBSD), formerly the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services (MGCS), to implement a continuing education (CE) requirement as a condition of Master Electrician (ME) licensing.

Auditor General Recommendation (AGR) 17.1:

“To enhance public electrical safety, we recommend that the ESA work together with the Ministry Government and Consumer Services (MGCS) to implement a continuing-education requirement as a condition of master electrician licensing.”

Updates:

  • ESA presented several concepts to our Advisory Committees for input and conducted a public consultation in the summer of 2021.
  • The Ministry started its public consultation on a CE Framework for Licensed Master Electricians in March 2022 (see here).
  • In April 2023, the Ministry advised ESA that a regulatory change to implement mandatory CE for MEs is not proceeding at this time. In the meantime, the Ministry continues to assess how best to respond to the Auditor General’s recommendation regarding continuing education in consideration of stakeholder feedback it has received.
