Permit Education
Hey there! I’m Permit Pete. The Electrical Safety Authority gave me this whole page to talk about myself. Permits and paperwork have a reputation of being boring, so I’ll keep this snappy.
Electrical permits are quick and affordable to obtain, and we make sure any electrical work done on your home follows the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. That lowers the risk of fire, shocks, and other hazards. Potential homebuyers and insurance companies may also ask for permits when making decisions. So, it’s really a win-win-win when it comes to permits.
Aannnd my work here is done. Oh, you're still reading? I'm flattered! Ok, here's some more fun facts about permits:
- If you hire a Licensed Electrical Contractor (LEC) to do electrical work on your home, they should always file for the electrical permit as part of their job. Make sure you ask them for it – it should be listed on their estimate.
- In fact, by law, only an LEC can be hired to do electrical work on a home in Ontario. If you don’t find them listed on this tool – they aren’t licensed!
- Electrical permits are different than building permits. You might need both depending on the job.
This page over here has even more technical details about ESA electrical permits if you’re interested.
And if you’re looking for the forms themselves, head over here.
