Understand the risks associated with doing electrical work.
The Ontario Electrical Safety Code defines electrical installation requirements. These requirements keep you, your family, and your property safe from potential shock and fire hazards. If you are considering modifying your electrical system think about potential risks associated with different wiring installations. Also, consider who might have done previous electrical work and whether that work was inspected. The Electrical Safety Authority recommends the use of a licensed electrical contractor – and reminds you that all electrical wiring work done in Ontario should be inspected by the Electrical Safety Authority.
Purchasing a new home?
Consider the condition of the home's electrical system - you should know:
- 57% of homes that are between 15 and 50 years old have been re-wired or
had modifications done to their home’s electrical system.
- 68% of homeowners report they retain an electrician to do electrical work –
32% do not.
- 58% of homeowners who have done electrical modifications indicate they
have little experience. - 63% of homeowners report that an inspection was conducted.
